Ingress Adventure Zine - Now taking submissions!

I just released the call for submissions for an Ingress fanzine over at Blank Party!

Ingress is an ARG (alternate reality game) that uses your phone and Google Maps to turn your city/town's landmarks into a game of capture the flag. I'm absolutely obsessed due to how active the game is (at one point, I was walking 5mi a day!) and how social it becomes, the longer you play. Since moving to Burlington, I've discovered a HUGE Ingress community that has kept me addicted. This game is the reason I know so much about my city and the people who live there.

I've heard countless crazy adventure stories since I started playing, so I want to collect some of those stories in the next Blank Party anthology - Ingress Adventure Zine!

Click here for our call for submissions!
Deadline is January 15th, 2016.

MICE EXPO 2015!

In just a little over a week, I'll be at The Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo in Cambridge, MA! This is a free event and one of my favorite conventions, so check it out if you're in the area!

I'll be with fellow Blank Party co-founder, Reilly Hadden, with freshly printed copies of Earthbound Party! We'll also be sitting next to our pretty cool friends John Carvajal and Luke Howard. Across from us is another other cool friend, Carlisle Robinson, and just two tables away is The Center for Cartoon Studies table, which is usually loaded with current student work! The Crumb Room is where it's at.

See you soon, Cambridge!

SPX Recap

SPX 2015 was a blast! I had an absolutely incredible experience this year - tabled with some rad people, saw lots of old friends, made lots of new friends, witnessed the first ever all female winning sweep of the Ignatz awards, debuted Earthbound Party... which by the way, sold out in the first 4 hours! We had no idea it was going to be so popular.

We brought a fairly small print run with us (only 40 books) because my order arrived while we were already on the road from Vermont to Bethesda, MD. But still, the response was AMAZING! We'll definitely be more prepared with more copies for MICE next month!

And of course, if you missed out at SPX and would like a copy, you can grab one at my online store.

Anyway, I'm really happy (and still a bit exhausted.) SPX was fantastic. Have some pictures:

See you next year, Bethesda!

Awesome Possum Kickstarter

I have a comic about Thylacines and a Newt illustration in this really exciting anthology that is CURRENTLY being Kickstarted! Help it reach it's goal!

Awesome Possum is a natural science anthology full of comics and illustrations from both natural science illustrators and cartoonists!

This series was created by current CCS-er, natural science illustrator, and fellow Schulz Librarian, Angela Boyle. Please contribute and share if you can!

SMALL PRESS EXPO 2015!

In just a few weeks I'll be exhibiting at SPX 2015 in Bethesda, MD! I was lucky enough to snag a table thanks to my (incredibly talented) friend and fellow CCS alum, Jesse Mead.

I'll be with Jesse and Amelia Onorato at table H4! Since my SPX table was so last minute, I'm still planning it... but I'll have copies of Belchville, VT issues 1, 2, & 3 for sure!

My fellow Blank Party! co-founders, Chu and Reilly Hadden, will be tabling as well! Reilly will be at table B13A and Chu will be at table B14A. Stop by at each of our tables, pick up a copy of EARTHBOUND PARTY!, and say hi to all of us!

I'm especially excited for this issue because I'm going to be in it!! I collaborated on a conversation style comic with my friend Anna Sellheim. Everyone should check out the Kickstarter RIGHT NOW and make sure this amazing series continues.

How I Made My Thesis! (Repost from my Tumblr)

So, for the past year, I’ve been working on issues 2 & 3 of Belchville, VT for my thesis at The Center for Cartoon Studies. I decided to make a handmade coptic-stitched hard cover book to contain all 3 issues and I documented it each step of the way.

MATERIALS & TOOLS

ASSEMBLY

I began by laying out everything in InDesign, which takes way longer than it looks. When printing a booklet, the whole book has to be a multiple of 4 to print correctly, so that takes a bit of planning. Also, since I was coptic binding, I wanted to do signatures. To do signatures, your pages should be a multiple of whatever number of signatures you want (but still be a multiple of 4! Ack!) My book - comics & extra stuff - ended up coming out to 84 pages, so I did 3 signatures.

Then, I printed out EVERYTHING. I printed out my “guts” and the black layer of my front & back covers. I also trimmed everything on my school’s industrial paper cutter, including my bookboards.

Since my cover was dark blue with black print, I had to screenprint the the title and my name in white so it would stand out. After that dried, I began gluing my covers to my bookboard using neutral PH PVA. That stack of paper in the back was used as weight as the glue dried.

The after the front and back covers were glued, I glued a cut piece of book cloth to the spine. When that dried, I cut and glued my cream speckletone paper to the inside covers. And dude… gluing took FOREVER. It was definitely my least favorite part of this whole process. It was torture.

Since I wanted to put non-Belchville related thesis work on a CD in the back (and also Belchville stickers), I decided to make a pocket for the back cover. I kind of guesstimated this part. You can kind of see how I cut it in the picture above. The sides were folded and tucked under the piece that was glued directly to the bookboard, so it looked seamless. It worked out pretty great, except that I glued them on backwards… they still work the same though. It's cool.

I love this machine. My school has a lot of really amazing bookbinding machines which I love, but I never had the chance to fully appreciate this one until now. This is a drill press. It drilled the 5 holes through my paper and bookboard so that I would be able to coptic stitch. This thing is the best.

The last step was sewing this whole dang thing together! I was taught to use these curved embroidery needles by wordsxpictures and they make coptic stitching like 10000x’s easier. THANKS ASHLEY. <3 But yeah, I actually really like this part of the process.
